Understanding Burn Contracture

Burn contracture release restores movement and appearance where healed burns have tightened the skin and limited motion.

Causes

After a deep burn heals, scar tissue can shrink and tighten (contracture), especially across joints, pulling the skin and restricting normal movement. The deeper the burn and the longer healing takes, the more likely contractures form.

Symptoms

Contractures appear as tight, thickened bands of scar that limit the movement of a joint or distort nearby features, sometimes causing pain or functional difficulty. They commonly affect the hands, neck, limbs, or face.

Diagnosis

Dr. Sunil Rathor assesses the scar’s extent, depth, and effect on movement and function, along with the condition of nearby healthy tissue. This determines the reconstructive approach — such as scar release with skin grafts or flaps — to restore both motion and appearance.
