Understanding Cleft Lip / Palate

Cleft lip and palate repair restores normal appearance and function to the lip and roof of the mouth through carefully staged surgery.

Causes

A cleft occurs when the tissues of the lip or palate do not fully join during early pregnancy, influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is one of the most common congenital differences and is present at birth.

Symptoms

A cleft is visible as a gap or split in the upper lip and/or the roof of the mouth, and can affect feeding, speech development, hearing, and dental alignment. The degree ranges from a small notch to a complete separation.

Diagnosis

Cleft care is planned by Dr. Sunil Rathor through clinical examination and, often, a multidisciplinary team assessment covering feeding, hearing, speech, and dental needs. Surgery is staged at appropriate ages to restore both appearance and function safely.
